PHOTOMONTAGE

DIPTYCHS

DIGITAL VS FILM

I will never forget the moments of opening a metal tank filled with water and pulling out a developed wet roll of film. An instant boost of andrenaline, excitement and anticipation of what's there.
The experience that holds a promise of unforgettable images,
a complete love affair with the unknown.
What do I get from my digital camera today? An instant check ,
a proof and verification of every frame that I just shot a second ago. What a change...
In today's fast paced high-tech world digital photography fits like a glove. The demand for speed and versatility, the possibilities of transmission and manipulations are greatly covered by digital rather than film.
The digital art became a new form of expression. Photoshop, the digital darkroom offers completely new variety of tools to produce art. However, it can not be said that a gelatin silver print produced by hand by the artist is more of an art piece than a print spat out from a fancy Epson printer. It's about the content rather than form.
Working in digital darkroom means sitting for hours in front of my computer screen, editing, altering and manipulating images. It is a very tiring process for me, but not less than spending a day in a dark basement developing my prints, dodging and burning using all parts of my body, wasting countless amounts of paper just to get the right exposure. Plus the chemicals are intoxicating and really "not so green". Everything for the sake of the print.
It was almost like the labour and delivery, a birthing of a photograph, somehow a great experience uncomparable to any software out there.
